In 2018 the cable car company Saastal Bergbahnen AG realised a new mountain station for the existing Allalin 1 (recently Allalin 5) glacier ski lift. The existing valley station was moved approx. 20 - 30m to the left. In addition, an increase in capacity by means of a new ski lift 2-GSL Allalin 4, parallel to Allalin 5, has been created. The new tensioning station in the valley of the Allalin 4 is to be constructed analogously to the two parallel glacier ski lifts Allalin 2 & 3. The lifts started their operation in December 2018.
The two main reasons for the project are safety on the one hand, and capacity expansion on the other. For years, global warming has also been noticeable in Saas-Fee. At the exit point of the Allalin 5 glacier ski lift, the glacier has melted, making the descent steeper and shorter. When the number of incidents increased at the exit point last summer/autumn, the supervisory authority together with the Saastal Bergbahnen AG analysed the situation. Consequently, the mountain station had to be lowered by the winter season 2018/19 at the latest.
In recent years, the offer of the summer skis has been steadily expanded and Saas-Fee is now regarded as a global snow sports resort for young and top athletes during the training phases in summer and autumn. Expressed in numbers, over 330 teams from 19 different countries train on the over 50 racetracks of Saas-Fee. This is increasingly leading to capacity bottlenecks at the Allalin 5 glacier ski lift, with waiting times of up to 45 minutes per trip. A second lift had been built parallel to the first lift to ensure that athletes can continue to enjoy top conditions and that the summer ski product can be further expanded, thus doubling capacity.
