As planned, the pilot project of PostBus, the municipality of Saas-Fee and Saas-Fee/Saas Valley Tourism with the luggage robot Robi is entering its second phase. Holiday guests and locals can use the service free of charge from June to August by leaving suitcases and heavy bags to transport. A teleoperator now monitors the Robi's operations from a control centre in the village.
The luggage robot is available to guests daily from June to August. Operating times are planned from 8.30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Those travelling to Saas-Fee can book the service in advance via the website (www.robi.postauto.ch).
This is how it works:
The Robi then waits at the PostBus terminal for those arriving and reliably takes customers' luggage free of charge to their desired destination or, on departure, from their place of stay to the PostBus terminal. Spontaneous bookings on the spot are also possible if operating times permit.
A teleoperator is now responsible for monitoring the Robi during the summer season. This person works in the control centre in Saas-Fee and can intervene remotely in an emergency. At the same time, the teleoperator can steer the Robi back to the next starting point. There will still be a safety attendant during June, as was the case last autumn. Robi will drive fully autonomously in July and August, while the teleoperator will be responsible for monitoring.
Guests can use the luggage robot for a maximum of 15 minutes, and then it has to go to the next starting point. Four stops are served. According to the permit, the service is limited to the Dorfstrasse in Saas-Fee during the pilot project.
PostBus is responsible for the operation and operational management of the project. The transport company was a pioneer in autonomous driving in public transport in Sion and therefore brought valuable experience to the project. The operation of the Robi with the help of a teleoperator should provide further important insights. They can also be incorporated into the planning and design of services in the area of "On-demand". PostBus's goal is to offer passengers a good travel chain to encourage more people to use public transport for leisure travel or holidays. At the same time, PostBus wants to make public transport more attractive for customers and more efficient, with innovative offers such as on-demand services.
PostBus is implementing the project with its partners, Saas-Fee (municipality) and Saas-Fee/Saastal Tourism. The project is financially supported by Innotour, the tourism promotion instrument of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco). During the pilot operation, all interested persons and holiday guests in Saas-Fee have the opportunity to test Robi on-site free of charge. All information on the project can be found here and at www.robi.postbus.ch.
