Spielbodenbahn cableway officially opened
20 december 2016
Saas-Fee, 20 December 2016. At today’s official inauguration of the new Spielbodenbahn cableway, guests had the chance to try out the new gondolas and were treated to a range of musical and culinary delights. Alongside the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony and blessing of the cableway, a cheque was presented to the charity Blindspot.
The new Spielbodenbahn cableway has been taking skiers and snowboarders up into the mountains since 17 December. This Tuesday morning the cableway was officially opened in the presence of more than 50 invited guests. In his address, the president of the board of directors of Saastal Bergbahnen AG, Pirmin Zurbriggen, quoted the outgoing US president: “Yes we can!” He was referring to the extremely ambitious target of building a completely new cableway within a very short period of time. Zurbriggen thanked all those who believed in the project and its realisation. “That was the basis for everything,” he underlined.
Zurbriggen, a former top skier, compared the construction of the Spielboden cableway to his World Cup races. “If I want to get anywhere as an athlete, I need a team,” he said, adding that without the team, this new cableway would have remained nothing but a dream. Sometimes, he said, you may be ready to start, but still need to wait for the go-ahead. Patience is required in such cases, but he could now say that the Spielbodenbahn had been a good race for the team, and if it had been a World Cup, they would definitely have been up there on the podium. Perhaps not on the top step, but the important thing is to have done one’s best and enjoyed the ride. “And today, I am delighted that our visitors can benefit from the new cableway which, together with the new WinterCARD, increases both the capacity and convenience of our resort.”
8500 francs for a good cause
Rainer Flaig, CEO of Saastal Bergbahnen AG, was also full of praise for his staff and explicitly thanked supplier Garaventa for the excellent cooperation. He also spoke about the old Spielbodenbahn cableway, whose gondolas have been sold for 1200 francs a piece. The company is donating part of the proceeds to Blindspot, a Swiss charity for young people with and without disabilities. Rainer Flaig was able to present a cheque worth 8500 francs to the representatives of the organisation.
The cableway was then blessed by priest Konrad Rieder. The ceremony was accompanied by a lively mix of joyful and seasonal songs sung by Saas-Fee primary school children. Afterwards, the guests had the opportunity to try out the new cableway. Celebrations also took place up on the Spielboden, where guests were treated to the gourmet delicacies of the Spielboden restaurant.
A big opening party is taking place next Monday, 26 December 2016 for visitors and locals. The party starts at 3.30 p.m. and will be held on the Kalbermatten sports ground next to the valley station of the cableway. Music will be provided by the Valais band WintersHome and Anna Rossinelli, a singer from Basel, and there will be a food corner and bar. The concerts are free of charge and the team from Saastal Bergbahnen look forward to a joyous celebration with plenty of visitors and locals alike.
