Alpine multi-day hike

Alpine multi-day hike Saas-Fee - Zwischbergen - Domodossola

Four days, 3,500 metres of climbing, two passes and a border crossing - that's what awaits you on this multi-day hike from the glacier village of Saas-Fee over the Zwischbergen Pass to the small Italian town of Domodossola.

The multi-day tour is very demanding and requires experience in alpine terrain and a good level of fitness. But the unique panorama of the Saas 4000m peaks, the tranquillity of the Zwischbergen valley and the Italian charm of Domodossola are well worth the effort. And at the end of the hike, a real pizza or gelato awaits you as a reward.

Best of all, together with Brig Simplon Tourism, we have put together a package that includes all the essential services.

The high alpine Saas Valley is the perfect place to get in the mood for the tour ahead. Spend your first night at the Wellnesshostel4000 in Saas-Fee, where you can relax before the storm and enjoy the glacier village in all its splendour. You can also swim a few laps at Aqua Allalin to get your joints in shape for the next few days.

In Saas-Fee you will also receive the SaastalCard, which gives you free use of the mountain railways (except the Metro Alpin) and the postbus in the Saas Valley for the duration of your stay (plus your choice of day of arrival or departure)! You will also benefit from discounts of up to 30% on many activities.

The tour starts in car-free Saas-Fee and leads over the wild Plattjen, with spectacular views of the Mischabel mountain range. If you are lucky, you may see ibex and chamois, especially in the morning. The route then continues to Saas-Almagell, where you climb up to the Almagelleralp. A cosy atmosphere and culinary highlights await you in the hut.

  • Start: Saas-Fee
  • Destination: Almagelleralp
  • Duration: 5:35 h
  • Ascent: 1,147 metres in height | Descent: 752 metres in height

The second day takes you to the Zwischbergen Pass at an altitude of almost 3300 metres, with spectacular views of the Saas 4000m peaks and the Italian panorama. The descent takes you through fascinating lunar landscapes to the mountain guesthouse Bord Zwischbergen, where you can enjoy a well-earned meal and a relaxing night's sleep.

  • Start: Almagelleralp

  • Duration: 6 h
  • Ascent: 1,123 metres in height | Descent: 1,957 metres in height

The route continues towards Italy, to the Passo di Oriacca. Clear mountain lakes and a varied landscape beckon along the way. Italian hospitality and relaxation await you in Bocgnanco so that you are ready for the last day!

  • Finish: Rifugio San Bernardo
  • Duration: 6:10 h
  • Ascent: 1'131 hm | Descent: 857 hm

On the last day, despite the already recognisable Domodossola, a long but interesting itinerary awaits you. On the historic Via Stockalper, you will walk along paths used by traders and passers-by hundreds of years ago. Once in Domodossola, you are free to explore this cosy little Italian town and reward yourself with pizza, pasta, gelato or an Aperol.

  • Start: Rifugio San Bernardo
  • Finish: Domodossola
  • Duration: 5:50 h
  • Gradient: 311 metres | Descent: 1,664 metres

This multi-day hike is very challenging and requires a number of skills:

  • Experience and independent orientation in high alpine terrain
  • Above-average fitness (8 hours of walking and over 1,000 metres of altitude are no problem)
  • Sure-footedness, very good experience of walking on alpine paths
  • Experience of multi-day treks
  • Good judgement of weather conditions
  • Route planning skills
  • A sense of adventure

Depending on the weather and local conditions (snow, etc.), the tour is possible from around mid-June to mid-October.
