S.F. is a beautiful town in a beautiful location. But it was obvious that it is suffering from the economic hard times in Europe and the over-valued franc. On the one hand we were pleased that there were no crowds but on the other it meant that things were not operating at full tilt. It seems obvious that prices have to come down, even if only 10% from their current levels. Our hotel was empty and seemed like a ghost house--made worse by the three hotels around being closed. When this situation occurs it seems completely unjust that the price for our room was as high as it was (it should be 20-25% less than it was). The room was nice but the beds were old, saggy and uncomfortable. So the price-value for our stay we have to be rated low. Perhaps the crowds we saw in Zermatt were just day-trippers, but I suspect that if accommodation prices in S.F. were to come down, you might attract some of those Zermatt crowds to stay in S.F. (empty tennis courts and golf driving available at almost not cost unlike Zermatt).
