Britannia Hut: A Platform to the Glacier

The Britannia Hut sits at 3,030m, like a guard house at the gates to the magnificent mountains and glaciers beyond. The hut is open all year round to hikers, climbers, skiers and mountaineers seeking refuge or simply a good meal in the mountains. In the winter months (between October and February) the hut is un-manned and only the smaller, but equally comfortable winter room remains open. With 12 beds, wood supply and a stove the space is well equipped for deep winter expeditions. In the spring time the main hut is opened providing half board accommodation for up to 134 people, with toilets and a drying room. The original hut was built in 1912 and proved very popular, since then the hut has been renovated and extended with the most recent work being completed in 1997 – but this time with the use of helicopters! The hut is ideally located for access to the mountains, only a short journey from the top of Felskinn lift. It sits proudly looking towards the Mattmark resevoir and the mountains beyond that promise wilderness and adventure.
