The Chapel Trail from Saas-Grund to Saas-Fee illustrates the mysteries of the Psalter, i.e. of the three rosaries "the Joyful, the Sorrowful and the Glorious" in a total of 15 shrine-like little chapels (built from 1708 to 1711).
|
All of these little rosary chapels lie at irregular intervals on the mountainside and contain about a hundred painted figures carved out of wood, all exclusively depicting the mysteries of the rosary. Each rosary aptly occupies terrain sharing the same characteristics: the Joyful is situated on the bumpy spur along the mountainside, the Sorrowful on the row of steeply rising outcrops of prehistoric rock, and the Glorious on the side of the valley of the river Vispe. The centrepiece of the trail, the ¿Zur Hohen Stiege¿ pilgrimage chapel, is situated at the mid-point of the trail. It was built in the year 1687 and contains some notable works of art. A procession is still held every year on the afternoon of Ascension Day. |
