After many years of considering how the unique world of glaciers higher than 3000m above sea-level could be made accessible for snow sports, various impracticable ideas were put forward. For reasons of safety and speed and for the protection of the environment, it was decided that the best option would be to build the Metro Alpin.
This high-altitude underground funicular was constructed through a sloping tunnel between the altitudes of 3000m and 3500m above sea-level - a world first. The modern machine for cutting tunnels broke through after 18 months of construction time. This unique construction project carried the large price tag of approx. 35.5 million francs. |
