Day trip destinations

Whether it's the world's highest revolving restaurant or an idyllic mountain lake; tame marmots or the world's largest ice pavilion: with the Free Republic of Holidays, Saas-Fee's railway network, you can reach an abundance of top day trip destinations ‒ the journey is an experience in itself!

Allalin, Saas-Fee Mountains upon mountains...

The Alpine Express cable car and the highest underground train in the world – the Alpine Metro – bring you comfortably up to Mittelallalin. At 3,500 metres above sea level, this is the highest tourist attraction in Saas-Fee – that is, unless you’re athletic enough to climb to one of our 18 4,000-metre peaks. On a clear day, you’ll get a distant view of Lake Maggiore and at night you may even see the lights of Milan. Here you can also discover the world’s largest ice grotto and yet another world record holder:  Allalin, the highest
revolving restaurant in the world.

Plattjen, Saas-Fee Discover Plattjen – home to mountain enthusiasts.

A modern six-person cable car makes the ascent up to Plattjen from Saas-Fee. Just a few minutes later, you’re 2,750 metres above sea level taking in a breathtaking view of the Mischabel chain. Plattjen is a popular starting point for mountain hikes in summer. In winter, there’s a diverse range of slopes, with a beautiful forest trail for novice skiers and an FIS piste for the pros amongst you. All your gourmet needs will be catered for at the Terminus mountain restaurant, or at what may well be the most stylish mountain chalet in Switzerland, the Vernissage Berghaus Plattjen.

Need-to-know:

  • Those who want to can spend a night at either of the restaurants.
  • Enjoy a unique view of the Mattmark reservoir from Plattjen’s lookout Point.

Heidbodme, Saas-Almagell Where an Olympic ski champion mastered their craft.

The pistes of Heidbodme high above Saas-Almagell are always swathed in snow, and it's here that skiing stars Pirmin, Heidi and Silvan Zurbriggen were born. But the journey by chairlift to this lookout point at 2,400 m above sea level is worth your while even in summer. The distant view of the Mischabel chain and the Monte Rosa massif is simply breathtaking – and the ultra-modern mountain restaurant draws you in with its delicious menu and panoramic terrace.

Need-to-know:

  • Heidbodme is the starting point for several stunning alpine trails, like the Mattmark – Ofental – Antronapass – Saas-Almagell route or the new Heidbodme – Antronopass mountain trail, which you can also start from Mattmark reservoir.
